Abstract
Pefloxacine was evaluated in the treatment of bone and-joint infection for three months at the department of orthopaedic surgery, Catholic University Medical College. A clinical trial was performed in seven patients with hematogenous osteomyelitis, nine patients with osteomyelitis due to compound long bone fracture or pin tract infection by external skeletal fixation, and one patient with pyogenic arthritis. Six patients were treated in the presence of foreign materials to fix the fracture. Treatment consisted of pefloxacine 400mg infused over one hour, every twelve hours for three to fourteen days.
Pefloxacine was remarkable sensitive against gram(-) rods, aerobic & anaerobic, and gram (+) cocci but much less active against streptococcus and gram (+) rods. The clinical therapeutic efficacy was 82.4%.
The side effects of pefloxacine were observed in 3 cases (15%) : nausea & vomitingg in 2 cases, and skin eruption in one but it was transient.
In conclusion, pefloxacine is a safe and effective antibiotics that can be used effectively in the treatment of osteomyelitis and pyogenic arthritis, but more strict long-term follow-up should be studied in future because osteomyelitis is a disease c high. frequency of relapse later.
